Being a long time fan of the "Inferno" storyline, this was an excellent sequel and a great way to reintroduce Magik back to the X-Men.Product details

XInfernus C B Cebulski Giuseppe Camuncoli Books Reviews
I am far from a comic buff, but I've developed something of an addiction to Marvel's X-Men following January 2008's hardcover collection of House of M. In my childhood there was a fascination with the mutant superhero team, but as I grew older the plots became convoluted and after witnessing serial retconning and multiple runs that conflicted one another, I gave up. Fortunately attempts were made by Marvel to atone for their sins(in this title, at least, I will never forgive the new direction of Spiderman...NEVER!).
Since then, I have expanded my education from Grant Morrison's "New X-Men" run to Matt Fraction's "Utopia", following the listed major story arcs listed on Wikipedia. I've also followed minor story arcs and a couple of Marvel Universe-wide events to understand the events between the major arcs (I'm all about that 616).
*Phew*
Now that you know my life story, let's move on to the review. In my attempt to follow X-Men canon, I picked up X-Infernus and found myself wholly underwhelmed. It does its job in that it picks up some dangling plot threads that were abandoned, it doesn't serve much to the overall direction of the realigned series beyond reminding us of origins and giving us the return of Magik, AKA Illyana Nikolievna Rasputin. In doing that it justifies its existence...but only barely.
The ramifications of reintroducing the character echo in the sequels of the storyline ranging from the reformation of the New Mutants to the events of Utopia.
It contributes, but personally, if I could have gone back in time, I might not have bought it. But if you're a hardcore buff following the major arcs, I suppose you'll just have to suffer through it so that you can understand the rest.
It's not a bad story, but it's far from the caliber of its direct predecessors, "Divided We Stand" and "Manifest Destiny". So, I guess if you're not hardcore you might enjoy it, too, as it's mainly a stand-alone.
Ok, maybe this just deserves 4.3 stars. This book really doesn't stand on it's own-- it requires a pretty serious familiarity with Magik/Colossus/New X-Men continuity. Or if you don't have that, you can read the back few pages of the book for a good overview...but you will still be missing some of the emotional connection this story holds for those of us who have been following this tragic tale for...oh, over 20 years now! I think that really makes or breaks this for readers...if you haven't been following this story, you will be "underwhelmed." But as someone who has been following, I loved it.
This book is no epic- it really just covers 4 issues, plus a few extra pages. Also, the story can feel a bit jumbled or rushed at times. Despite that, it is still excellent-- dramatic, action packed, and emotional. The characterizations are excellent, especially Illyana, Pixie, Colossus and Nightcrawler. The heroes are all shown using their powers creatively, and the fight scenes are great.
Every drawing in the book is beautiful--the artwork simply blew me away. I highly recommend the over-sized hardcover version, so you can best enjoy the amazing visuals.
Again, this is definitely not a stand-alone story. If you have the right expectations, however, it is a really great moment for the X-Men.
My one disclaimer I am a longtime fan of the X-Men, very familiar with their history, and a big fan of the Rasputin family of characters. If you are too, you will enjoy this book.
The only thing I wasn't familiar with here was the backstory that took place in New X-Men shortly before this story, but it is recapped here in a one-page summary. (I can't seem to find those collected anywhere). Anyone following the X-Men over the past several years knows Illyana has played a significant role in several storylines, including the X-Men installment of Fear Itself and Avengers vs. X-Men. This story is a great introduction to the latest incarnation of a character that has been through more than her share of transformations ever since she was introduced way back in the early days of New Mutants in the 1980s. I'm not usually a fan of bringing characters back from the dead, but when you consider Illyana's ties to limbo, where time has no meaning, the way they tell her story actually makes more sense than a lot of resurrections comics have pulled out of nowhere over the years.
I'm also a big fan of Colossus, and his role in this story as the overprotective brother does not disappoint. He has always been a naturally gentle, artistic soul who will literally go to hell and back for his family. This is a good example of where his true priorities have always been.
I also really liked the interaction between the veteran X-Men (Wolverine, Colossus and Nightcrawler) who team up with the new generation (Pixie, Mercury and Rockslide) to go after Illyana. I really only know the New X-Men from the crossover events, but I've always thought they were interesting characters when playing the role of the youngsters a little in awe of what their older counterparts are doing, while at the same time proving themselves and asset to the team.
The art was fantastic throughout. I'd definitely recommend this to any X-Men fan.
I was really Excited to read this and was really disappointed the story seemed jumbled and just missing something. I am a big fan of the New Mutants so looking forward to a continuation of this story line from way back but it just fell flat and honesty they could have covered this in 1 to 2 comic books but it dragged on and on..
Being a long time fan of the "Inferno" storyline, this was an excellent sequel and a great way to reintroduce Magik back to the X-Men.
